The Real Red Door Experience: The Cottage
During a visit with my grandmother in early 2013 it became very apparent that she was dealing with memory issues and was beginning to have trouble living independently. My husband and I asked my Gramma to move in with us during Christmas and the final decision was made shortly after. The next obstacle: Where will she stay once she got here? We began researching the possibility of building an addition made especially for my grandmother.
Choosing Red Door
We approached multiple designers and builders, but were ultimately disappointed in their design, references, quality of work, and ability to complete our unique project. Finally, I called Red Door. Instead of hearing a "no", or being given a stock plan to be modified, Red Door simply said, "Let's see what we can do."
After exploring many options, from building an extension onto our existing garage to creating a separate space on our property, we chose a custom cottage Red Door designed. The cottage is senior friendly and was built onto our property so we can care for her as her memory continues to decline and she requires more support.

Our experience working with Red Door made the design, planning and build easy for my husband and I. Red Door, with great patience and grace, tolerated my many "pie in the sky" ideas and managed to capture everything in a 765 square foot cottage. The design was customized to fit both my grandmother's needs and our own. Our house is an old Colonial in downtown Raeford and Red Door's design seamlessly blended new with the old. The cottage looks like it has always been a part of this property. The cottage has been the talk of the neighborhood, and is even on the Raeford Garden Club Christmas Tour of Homes this year!
Working With Red Door
Building on an existing property with a busy family living on the site, which is located on a busy road downtown has many challenges. The Red Door team managed to make this easy for us and was able to modify the plans to fit our needs and budget. From the beginning, they were professional and ensured customer service through the entire build. The Red Door team built the structure better than I could have imagined, even after we requested modifications to the original plan. They were able to work with the city inspectors to modify a requirement for a covered walkway into a pergola that my husband and I requested and are extremely pleased with.
Feels like family
When Gramma asked, "Who is the family that built this?" I knew then how much energy Red Door had put into making this perfect for us all. She says she would "really like to tell them how comfortable this little old house is and how much it feels like it was made for [her]."
I definitely recommend Red Door Homes to anyone who wants a quality builder at a price they can afford.
